DIY Wainscoting

Hello everyone, decided to finally add my wainscotting project (I still havent taken any good pics with an actual camera...no flash iphone will do for now). I knew before i even bought my house that it would have wainscoting in it. I think its beautiful, fresh, chic, and timeless. obsessed! and i like big chunky wainscoting over the still gorgeous thin board and batten style.

One thing i dont like about wainscoting is the price attached. i couldnt afford it so i called my uncle and told him he had to help me make a fake version. He's an expert wood craftsman and he has all the tools to make custom wainscoting. I searched the whole internet to find the style i wanted and found this photo:

favored this general style, with a little less overhang at the top

My uncle drove down from tennessee with all of his tools (because he's the best ever) and we got right to work. I drew everything out and had tons of reference images and all walls dimensioned out but really he made each piece of molding. He added the edge treatments and everything!

this is my favorite area, Jimmy is a pro:
fit perfectly to my home!

Ready for sanding and painting! please note that my lazy butt took over a month to sand and paint. also note that i STILL havent done any touch ups! haha LAZY!!!

post painting, looking pretty despite my messy dining table :)

Let me know what you think :)

  16. oooh...I love this. I am adding wainscoting to my dining room as soon as we close on the townhouse. This gave me a good look at the bones of the project. I was thinking of cheating and just adding boxed frames made from the thinner molding, but truthfully I love your chunky look much better. It looks like it belongs and adds so much to the room. Thanks for sharing and you are a lucky girl to have such a kind and talented uncle.

  34. What was the width of the wood that he used? The verticle pieces of wood don't look like straight cuts. It looks like they have sorta a 2d effect. And how did he do the to?
