Booze and Cigar Party - Bender style

Bender cake
Here's a cake I made for my boyfriend's birthday this past year. We love watching Futurama together and I thought I'd throw him a manly party where he could drink beer, smoke cigars, and play poker. He loved it!

I baked what seemed like a billion little cakes in order to get the height and proportion right. I used rice krispy treats for the structure of the eyes. Rice krispy treats are a great option when sculpting or having something that comes out of a cake because it's so light weight. I did have to use lollipop sticks to keep them in place until it dried (use water to stick anything to fondant). i also used a lollipop stick to keep that cigar in place. If you look close, that antenna is actually a silver candle :)

Here's a photo of the cake once we cut into it:

  1. Do you have any more pics of the process? I LOVE this, it's so awesome, and I'd really like to surprise my son, a huge Futurama fan, for his 19th birthday.

  2. I dont! ugh can you believe it!! I started the cake after work and didnt finish till 3am, I was in such a time crunch that i totally forgot to take pics.

I basically made 4 or 5 small diameter cakes. I separated them into 3 sections each and iced between slices to build height. I had to insert thin dowels in a 4 places bc it was a little too wobbly the higher it got. i carved a little off the top sides to give it a round look.

when it came time to add fondant i messed up BIG TIME!!! if you look at the sliced photo you will see there are 2 layers of fondant to cover the catastrophy (i laugh now but i was so upset). After some quick thinking, my cake ended up looking fine and nobody could tell there was ever a catastrophy.

if you're not comfortable with fondant, i suggest regular icing. Regular icing will probably be easier as well.

I got my inspiration from this photo i saw online:

You can also try a flat cake where its his head and torso or even the whole body like this photo:

I'm new to the blogging world so any cake i make from now on will have step by step instructions, i promise :)
